Juan Lago, bass-baritone

About

Spanish bass-baritone Juan Lago, born to Spanish immigrants, was raised in Zurich, Switzerland, where he discovered his passion for music at an early age. After successfully completing his Matura, he pursued vocal studies at the Zürcher Hochschule der Künste. During this period, he gained invaluable performing experience at the opera house in Lucerne, Switzerland.

Embarking on concert tours across Switzerland and Germany, Juan showcased his vocal prowess in roles such as Leporello, Figaro, Papageno, and Don Giovanni, among many others. In Nino Rota’s "Aladdin and the Magic Lamp," he portrayed the sinister magician in the children's opera at the Volkhaus Zürich and the Tonhalle St. Gallen. Furthermore, in Gala concerts commemorating the 200th birthday of Giuseppe Verdi, Juan delivered stirring arias from Verdi’s "Macbeth" and "Don Carlos."

Juan's expansive repertoire and linguistic versatility (proficient in Spanish, German, Italian, French, and English) have led him to excel as a concert singer in sacred works, including performances of numerous oratorios throughout Europe. Noteworthy appearances include Schubert's B major Mass during the Salzburg Summer Festival.

Following the completion of his studies at the Zürcher Hochschule der Künste, Juan pursued further vocal training at Tel Aviv University, where he earned an "Artist Diploma" in opera, oratorio, and Lied with the prestigious distinction of "magna cum laude." Further refining his artistry, he sought guidance from renowned mentors, including Kammersänger Alfredo Kraus, Nicolaï Gedda, and Dieter Schweikard.
