The Spanish bass-baritone Juan Lago, born to Spanish immigrant parents, grew up in Zurich, Switzerland, where he discovered his passion for music at an early age. After successfully completing his Matura, he pursued vocal studies at the Zurich University of the Arts, where he made his stage debut at the Lucerne City Theater during his studies, gaining valuable early experience.
His career has taken him across Europe, where he established himself as a versatile opera singer, excelling in renowned roles such as Leporello, Figaro, Papageno, and Don Giovanni. In Nino Rota’s enchanting children’s opera Aladdin and the Magic Lamp, he captivated audiences as the sinister magician in performances at the Volkshaus Zurich and the Tonhalle St. Gallen. He made a particularly strong impression during gala concerts celebrating Giuseppe Verdi’s 200th birthday, enthralling audiences with powerful interpretations of arias from Macbeth and Don Carlos.
Thanks to his extensive repertoire and exceptional linguistic skills—he is fluent in Spanish, German, Italian, French, and English—Juan Lago is also a sought-after concert singer. He has made a name for himself at home and abroad with outstanding interpretations of sacred works, including well-known oratorios, including Schubert's Mass in B-flat during the Salzburg Summer Festival.
After completing his studies at the Zurich University of the Arts, Juan Lago continued his vocal training at Tel Aviv University, earning an “Artist Diploma” in opera, oratorio, and art song with the distinction magna cum laude. To further refine his artistry, he sought guidance from renowned singers such as Alfredo Kraus, Nicolai Gedda, and Dieter Schweikard.

Der spanische Bass-Bariton Juan Lago wuchs in Zürich auf, wo er früh seine Leidenschaft für Musik entdeckte. Nach dem Abschluss seiner Matura begann er sein Gesangsstudium an der Zürcher Hochschule der Künste (ZHdK) und feierte bereits während seiner Studienzeit sein Operndebüt am Stadttheater Luzern.
Seine Karriere führte ihn durch ganz Europa, wo er sich als vielseitiger Opernsänger etablierte und in Rollen wie Leporello, Figaro, Papageno und Don Giovanni zu hören war. In Nino Rotas Kinderoper Aladdin und die Wunderlampe überzeugte er bei Aufführungen im Volkshaus Zürich und in der Tonhalle St. Gallen. Weitere Höhepunkte waren Galakonzerte zum 200. Geburtstag von Giuseppe Verdi mit Arien aus Macbeth und Don Carlos.
Dank seines breiten Repertoires und seiner sprachlichen Kompetenz – Spanisch und Deutsch sowie fliessend Italienisch, Französisch und Englisch – ist Juan Lago auch als Konzertsänger gefragt. Er interpretierte zahlreiche Oratorienwerke im In- und Ausland, darunter Schuberts B-Dur-Messe bei den Salzburger Sommerfestspielen.
Nach seinem Studium an der ZHdK setzte er seine Ausbildung an der Universität Tel Aviv fort und schloss dort mit dem „Artist Diploma“ in Oper, Oratorium und Liedgesang mit Auszeichnung ab. Weitere künstlerische Impulse erhielt er durch die Zusammenarbeit mit renommierten Kammersängern wie Alfredo Kraus, Nicolai Gedda und Dieter Schweikard.
